Classroom Reflection III (from english lesson on March 4th 2013 with Prof. Dr. Marsigit, M.A.)

In english lesson on March 4th 2013, Mr. Marsigit told us as his student on his class to make some questions in english for him. Many different questions popped out from the students. But, because the limit of the time, Mr. Marsigit just answered some of them. The first question come from Alysa, the question is about how we must learn english mathematics. Mr. Marsigit said that her question is kinda weird because the question with the word how must not be following by the word must. He explained, based on his experiences, there is a need for us to learn everything around us that already exist in our environment that given by God. Everything must be naturally, not to be forced. So, in learning english mathematics, we must do naturally by ourselves. The problem in learning mathematics is the curriculum that not more humanize yet, the curriculum is still based on mathematics in formal. He added, the best way to learn is to translate and to be translated. And then do “silahturahmi” with everything that consist in english. “Silaturahmi” also can be implement in learning everything in our daily life.
And then, the second question come from Dian Permatasari. The question is about how to implement character education in teaching and learning process in the class. Mr. Marsigit answered, to implement character education in teaching and learning process in the class, we should understand about the aspect of teaching learning mathematics, first of all, we need to understand about the nature of mathematics. And then we should understand about various kind of mathematics by reading his article on powermathematics.blogspot.com. There are so many different definition of mathematic. But mainly, mathematics can be divided in two categories, formal mathematics and real mathematics. So, as a teacher, we should understand that there are many kind of mathematics, not only one.
The next question come from Faqih about why we should make a reflection on english class. Mr. Marsigit answered that to reflect is the highest order of thinking and to reflect is the best way to improve our english.
And then the last question come from Marissa about what is the main idea of the school mathematics. Mr. Marsigit answered, for the very younger student, knowledge is an activity, so the definition of mathematics for the younger student is school of mathematics that consist of activity to looking for the pattern, to solve problem, to investigate, and to do sosialization.
We couldn’t force students to learn mathematics. We just need to facilitate them so they can improve their ability by themselves. Last but not least, in learning english, we should be polite with english.
