Mathematics and Language 2

Article by : Prof. Dr. Marsigit, M.A
Reflected by : Agusti Eka Dyah Larasati (12313244015/Int Math Edu 2012)

I agree with your statement, sir. Good teacher are teacher that be able to facilitate their student well. Teachers must not force their student to learn mathematics because they have different characters. They just need to improve their capability with their own way. And as a teacher, we should be a good facilitator for them. For example, we can facilitate our student by providing student worksheet online like this blog. So student can construct their own knowledge by read  the articles from the blog or just make a reflection like this.

Classroom Reflection III (from english lesson on March 4th 2013 with Prof. Dr. Marsigit, M.A.)

In english lesson on March 4th 2013, Mr. Marsigit told us as his student on his class to make some questions in english for him. Many different questions popped out from the students. But, because the limit of the time, Mr. Marsigit just answered some of them. The first question come from Alysa, the question is about how we must learn english mathematics. Mr. Marsigit said that her question is kinda weird because the question with the word how must not be following by the word must. He explained, based on his experiences, there is a need for us to learn everything around us that already exist in our environment that given by God. Everything must be naturally, not to be forced. So, in learning english mathematics, we must do naturally by ourselves. The problem in learning mathematics is the curriculum that not more humanize yet, the curriculum is still based on mathematics in formal. He added, the best way to learn is to translate and to be translated. And then do “silahturahmi” with everything that consist in english. “Silaturahmi” also can be implement in learning everything in our daily life.
And then, the second question come from Dian Permatasari. The question is about how to implement character education in teaching and learning process in the class. Mr. Marsigit answered, to implement character education in teaching and learning process in the class, we should understand about the aspect of teaching learning mathematics, first of all, we need to understand about the nature of mathematics. And then we should understand about various kind of mathematics by reading his article on powermathematics.blogspot.com. There are so many different definition of mathematic. But mainly, mathematics can be divided in two categories, formal mathematics and real mathematics. So, as a teacher, we should understand that there are many kind of mathematics, not only one.
The next question come from Faqih about why we should make a reflection on english class. Mr. Marsigit answered that to reflect is the highest order of thinking and to reflect is the best way to improve our english.
And then the last question come from Marissa about what is the main idea of the school mathematics. Mr. Marsigit answered, for the very younger student, knowledge is an activity, so the definition of mathematics for the younger student is school of mathematics that consist of activity to looking for the pattern, to solve problem, to investigate, and to do sosialization.
We couldn’t force students to learn mathematics. We just need to facilitate them so they can improve their ability by themselves. Last but not least, in learning english, we should be polite with english.

Classroom Reflection II (from english lesson on February 25th, 2013 with Mr. Marsigit)

On that day, Mr. Marsigit was explained about the difference between traditional and inovative method of teaching. Its important for all people in this world to know about this Mr. Marsigit’s idea, so, i made this reflection.

The picture above is the ilustration about the difference between traditional method and inovative method of teaching learning mathematics. On the left side, there are a picture of teacher and his students that represent the traditional method of teaching. And on the other side, there are a picture that represent the inovative method of teaching learning mathematics.
In the traditional method of teaching, the teachers always behave as if he/she is the only resources of learning mathematics for the students.. In this method, teachers always deliver or give their knowledge to the students. The students just act as a receiver on class, just be a listener, just sit on their chair and waiting for their teachers knowledge to be transfered to them. So that, this method also called as a transfer of knowledge method of teaching. This method of teaching is the most method that most of us used to experienced in the elementary school, junior on maybe in our senior high school.
In the inovative approach of teaching learning mathematics the paradigm is that the teacher must facilitate the students on their way to develop their knowledge. So, there is must be exist a trust between the teacher and the student. Good teacher are teacher that be able to facilitate their student well. Therefore, the teacher need to use all technology such an IT like web blog that we can easily make them on the internet. It is important to do because students have different characters in the way on getting knowledge. In the junior or senior high school its a important to use the student worksheet. In the Mr. Marsigit’s class, we have web blog http://powermathematics.blogspot.com as our worksheet. In this method, students need to construct their own knowledge. In the English class, its a hope that we will achieve something good in english. The formal criteria is TOEFL.
We cant get better in english if we dont study by our confidence. Our future is in our own hands, so to learn english is our choice.

Elegi Permintaan Si Murid Cerdas Kepada Guru Matematika

by : Dr Marsigit, M.A.
reflection by : Agusti Eka Dyah Larasati

After read this article, i can draw a conclusion that teachers should change their traditional method of teaching to the innovative teaching method. Because in the traditional method teachers not empower students that must be empowered. Teachers tend to be selfish and seems like they are in a hurry to teach the student. Whereas students have different character that so  many of them can’t catch or understand the point of learning easily. In the innovative teaching method, the strategic means for teachers to be able to serve the needs of students that have different characters in learning mathematics is student worksheet. The student worksheet should be developed by the involved teacher, so that the student can use the worksheet for searching some knowledge to get some mathematical formulas by themselves.
In the Innovative teaching method , teacher should not positioning students as objects anymore, but as a subject. Teachers just facilitate the students to get knowldege. Teacher should gives opportunities for students to explore ideas and potential that possessed by students themselves. Students must be involved directly in the teaching process. Teachers should let students to discover themselves what they will be learning so it will be much easier to master, learn, and memorizing what they have already learned.  And then, last but not least, actually, knowledge can be effectively obtained from the interaction between the subject and the object, so that, its important to do discussion in the class.
I hope by reading this article, the teachers can open their mind to do the best to improve their method of teaching.
